Application Notes
HOW DO I INTERFACE TO THE SHARP LH79520
We are a beta site for this chip and hope to announce in early 2002 both a graphics touch terminal and developers kit including packaging for the LCD along with the board. Our development board is called mARMalade.
HOW DO I INTERFACE TO THE INTEL STRONGARM 1110
We recently sent units to multiple customers intending to use this LCD with the StrongARM. The most notable being Prolificx, a New Zealand design house and manufacturer of modular StrongARM products. They hooked it up!. Their website is: http://www.prolificx.com .
FAQS
Can I run this in my car? Not practically if sunlight hits it like any notebook screen it will wash out. This display was intended for indoor use.
Can I play movies or use this for video? No the response time is only about five frames per second and most controllers will only drive it with 256 colors.
How do I hook this up? This display does not have a controller on it. Watch this web page for controller kits that will be posted the minute they are available. Note this display uses a flex connector, which usually requires a conversion pcb to hook to existing SBC's etc. If you can't deal with it be patient and wait for a kit, just book mark this page and check back!
Are you going to make a PC kit out of this? Yes! (1/8/02) We should have a PCI kit by mid Feb '02 using the Chips & Technologies F65550, it will include the Panasonic EDMGRB8KJF 7.8" STN Color LCD with touch screen, CNT-EV-PCI, Microtouch compatible touch controller, cables, inverter and work with any version of windows. The touch screen will work with windows and emulate a mouse. The part number is SK-1009T and quantity one price is $349. Backorders are being accepted via fax and with credit card payment only. Your card will not be charged until the kit is shipped. This 256 color display is ideal for industrial control and instrumentation. It is not suited for video, full color or outdoor applications.
Are you going to make a monitor out of this? Yes, we already did, it is the XLM-78ST.
How about using your monitor as a second monitor control or dash display for Doom or Flight Simulator? Good idea. Tackle this software guys and get a monitor at half price for posting your code here (limit one per best game implementation).
Can I run this off a PIC or other microcontroller? No not without a separate LCD controller. If your creative with an FPGA design and you can build a buffer and circuit to feed this 18.4 megabytes of data a second. See question above.
What single board computers will this work with? Any with a National Semiconductor Geode and STN controller chip CS9211 or Chips and Technologies F65550. Any computer that has support for 8 bit single scan color displays such as the Hitachi SX19V001 (We have a large quantity of this hitachi display also) should also work. We will offer a SBC kit by March 1, 2002 (sbc kit page). NOTE: If you have a single board computer with a F6550 you will have to have a BIOS tool (some mfr's are stingy about this!)that allows integration of a new LCD bios that Earth can provide. This will work off embedded LCD controllers from SMOS used typically in non PC applications. We will consider doing this for a substantial order (1000+). Once we have the analog VGA controller in first quarter of 2002 this would be the easiest way to interface it (plugs into VGA 15 pin connector!).
Can you help me hook this up? We prefer you wait for a kit unless your a bonafide engineer. If your quantity is substantial we can provide engineering assistance. Email info@earthlcd.com .
