Glass Bonding

EarthLCD now offers optical enhancements for TFT displays.

This new technology, called glass bonding, produces an optical bond between a display's cover glass and the LCD.

By utilizing advanced proprietary optical bonding technology; we are able to overcome optical challenges for the LCD user, at an affordable price.  In a wide assortment of applications, standard LCD displays in high ambient lighting conditions appear to be "washed out" due to excessive reflection of ambient light.  Commercially available LCDs, especially when protected by a separate cover glass or plastic shield, do not deliver enough brightness to make the display functional in outdoors or in other high ambient light applications.  The glass bonding overlay process results in a reduction of ambient light reflections compared to other display enhancement technologies, at an affordable price.

Glass bonding seals either a top cover glass or touch screen directly to the face of the display.  This bonding process eliminates the air-gap between the display and the cover glass, vastly reducing reflective light, which causes visual washout of the display image.  Glass bonding also enhances structural integrity by supporting the LCD cell with the cover glass.  The bond provides shock protection, and eliminates fogging caused by trapped moisture in the air-gap.

Glass Bonding:

  • Provides the best reduction of  ambient light washout of any commercially available technology
  • Has a lower cost than most other competing technologies
  • Offers superior ruggedization, enhancing the display durability caused by vibration, shock and other environmental extreme.

Laminating a touch screen is no problem with the glass bonding process.  Any glass backed touch screen technology can easily be laminated.  Resistive, capacitive or SAW, touch screens can be bonded to the display, on top of the bezel.

Lead-time is 3-4 weeks after the receipt of the panels.  For volume pricing, the quantities ordered must be released within 6 months.  All glass thicknesses are 2mm unless customer specified.  Special ordered glass is additional.  "On bezel" glass is placed center on the bezel with a typical .20" overlap on the bezel, if possible.  Asymmetric or special placement may require a nominal engineering and tooling charge.  Additional charges may be necessary for special applications.

Glass bonding is offered on one Earth product at this time, the SK-2005R, a 12.1" LCD kit. The price is $300 (part # SVC-GBAR-12) and it can be ordered as an accessory upgrade on the SK-2005R page.
